The story

Resident Evil 2 is a remake of 1998's Resident Evil 2. The game was not developed with the intent of improving the original, but rather a reimagining of the original story with redesigned maps, characters and story elements. Gameplay mechanics are more similar to Resident Evil 7: Biohazard though with the use of an over-the-shoulder camera.

What it’s like

Grimy police-station corridors lit by flickering fluorescents, sodium-orange street light through rain-spattered windows, and deep pools of shadow that the flashlight cuts through in a narrow, nervous cone. The over-the-shoulder camera hugs close, so every door creak and distant groan feels like it is happening right behind you, while the score swells and drops out to near silence before a lunge. Its vibe is claustrophobic dread with a tactile, mechanical edge: the satisfying clunk of reloading, the scramble to manage a tiny inventory, the wet crunch of a zombie going down. Pacing is deliberate, built on backtracking, locked doors and the quiet tension of stretching ammo. Violence is frequent and graphic: zombies are gory, with a dismemberment system that severs limbs and spills blood across the floor, and there are grotesque creature encounters and moments of body horror. Fear is constant and mostly jump-driven rather than psychological, and there is no sexual content. Best suited to a late-night session alone with headphones, for players who want survival horror with tight resource pressure and a hint of rookie-cop bravado, not a gentle or low-stakes experience.
