The story

Resident Evil is the 2002 remake of the original 1996 video game of the same name featuring various improvements and gameplay overhaul. The game features all-new graphics and sound, and also incorporates gameplay elements from the earlier installments. While the overall plot remained mostly unchanged, several new areas and rooms were added to the game. This remake also features many additional modes, secrets and various endings over the original.

What it’s like

Cramped mansion corridors lit by sickly green-tinted lamps, rain streaking tall leaded windows, and pre-rendered backdrops that hold still while the camera lingers on dust, dim oil paintings and dark wooden floors. The fixed camera angles frame each room like a stage set, so every doorway and staircase feels like a held breath. Moody, sparse piano and string cues swell into tense stingers when something shambles near, and the grim thud of footsteps, creaking doors and the moan of the undead fill long silences between them. Rooms are slowly explored, backtracked through and puzzled over at a deliberate pace, with brief, sharp bursts of panic when the enemies close in. Its vibe is tense, clammy dread mixed with clinical, 1990s survival-horror tackiness. The violence is frequent and gruesome: zombies are dismembered, bodies are torn apart, and there is blood, disease and death throughout, though it is more about dread and resource scarcity than relentless gore. It suits a dark night alone with headphones, or anyone who loves slow-burn puzzle horror, locked-room mysteries and the tension of counting bullets.
