The story
Hailed by many as a masterpiece, this remake of the first entry in the long-running Resident Evil series is now playable in HD. Experience true terror in this genre-launching survival horror classic. The year is 1998. The Bravo Team of S.T.A.R.S., an elite special forces squad, has gone radio silent, and its Alpha Team has been dispatched to the forest on the outskirts of Raccoon City to investigate this mysterious disappearance. Attacked by bizarre and vicious dogs, alpha team members Chris and Jill manage to escape to a mysterious mansion in the middle of the forest. The horrors they encounter there are far greater than anyone might have foreseen...
What it’s like
Fixed camera angles over painted, pre-rendered rooms give every corridor a stage-set stillness, with dust hanging in lamplight, damp stone, cracked marble, and long stretches of dark where only a flashlight beam moves. The palette runs cold and muddy: greys, moss greens, and the warm amber of oil lamps. Sound does most of the work. Footsteps echo on tile, a distant moan drifts through a wall, and the ambient score swells sparingly, leaving long silences that make a single creak feel loud. Pacing is deliberate and methodical, built around backtracking, locked doors, item management, and puzzles, with tense bursts of combat that are clumsy by design and rarely feel like power fantasy. Save rooms with typewriters and a quiet, unhurried pause give the game a strange, sober rhythm between scares. The tone is grim, claustrophobic dread that tightens slowly rather than jolting. Violence is frequent and graphic: zombies are dismembered and shot in close detail, with gore and bodily horror, and some deaths are gruesome; there is no sexual content. For players who want old-school survival horror, careful exploration, and atmosphere that builds over hours rather than minutes.
