The story

True Fear: Forsaken Souls takes the best of the psychological thriller, blending in fun and intuitive gameplay mechanics. Episode 1, the first in a trilogy, will long be remembered.

What it’s like

Dim, cramped interiors lit by a single flashlight beam and the sickly glow of old monitors, with hand-painted backgrounds that favor muddy browns, cold greys and sudden flashes of red. The camera stays fixed on each room, so the unease builds from what sits at the edge of the frame rather than from movement. Sound does most of the work: low ambient drones, sparse stings when something shifts, and long stretches of near silence broken by the click of an object being picked up. Moments of pure dread are interspersed with quieter puzzle-solving, where the tempo slows to the rhythm of searching a drawer, turning a key, reading a scrap of paper. The mood is uneasy and mystery-driven, a creeping psychological tension rather than a cascade of scares, best suited to a late evening alone with the lights low, or an afternoon of puzzling through a dark house. Intensity sits in the moderate range: frightening atmosphere and some disturbing imagery, with occasional jump moments and brief grisly sights, but no sustained gore. It suits players who enjoy point-and-click puzzles with a slow-burn horror thread, and who want fear built through atmosphere and curiosity rather than constant threat.
