The story

Included in this bundle are: Outlast: In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, the asylum has been operating in strict secrecy… until now. Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Whistleblower: Whistleblower will let you play as Waylon Park, a software engineer under contract with Murkoff and the man who emailed journalists around the world - including Miles - at the beginning of Outlast. Although Whistleblower tells the story that led to Outlast, it will actually stretch past the events of the first game to show the final chapter in Mount Massive Asylum's story.

What it’s like

Bleak, claustrophobic found-footage-style first-person horror, lit almost entirely by the grainy green-and-black glow of a night-vision camcorder, with the occasional harsh white flash of a battery-drained flashlight cutting through the dark. Corridors of cracked tile, rusted gurneys and flickering fluorescents make the asylum feel decayed and oppressive, while the soundscape is built on distant moans, metal scraping on concrete and sudden, heart-stopping silence. Pacing is relentless: you move at a crawl through dim rooms, hide in lockers, and rarely get a moment to breathe, so the mood is one of constant dread and paranoia rather than release. Intensity is high: frequent graphic violence, bloody torture imagery, disturbing body horror and sustained psychological terror, with no gentle or low-stakes moments. The emotional register is grim and unsettling, following a journalist and then a conflicted whistleblower caught in a corporate cover-up that bends toward the supernatural. Made for players who want an unrelenting, atmospheric survival horror experience and can handle brutal, disturbing content.
