The story

Dead Space is a 2008 science fiction survival horror video game developed by EA Redwood Shores (now Visceral Games) for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game was released on all platforms through October 2008. The game puts the player in control of an engineer named Isaac Clarke, who battles the Necromorphs, reanimated human corpses, aboard an interstellar mining ship, the USG Ishimura.

What it’s like

Cold, cramped corridors lit by sickly blue-white emergency strips and the flicker of damaged consoles, with the ship's interior rendered as a rusted, industrial maze of catwalks, vents and zero-gravity shafts. The palette runs steel grey, bruised teal and arterial red, and the camera sits over the shoulder in a tight, close frame that makes every shadow feel like it could be hiding something. Sound does much of the work: a low, grinding drone of machinery, sudden metallic clangs, and a hush broken by the wet, skittering scrape of creatures in the walls, with an ambient score that swells in sparse, dissonant stings rather than melody. Pacing alternates long, tense stretches of exploration and environmental puzzles with sharp bursts of panic, and the inventory and HUD are projected onto Isaac's suit and the world itself, so the game feels physically present in the hands. The mood is claustrophobic dread tinged with grief and paranoia, as a lone engineer slowly unravels the ship's fate. Violence is frequent and graphic: dismemberment, gore and visceral creature attacks, with jump scares and sustained fear rather than gratuitous cruelty. It suits a late night alone with headphones, and it's for players who want intense, atmospheric survival horror with strong sci-fi bones.
