The story
Geotastic is a free crowd-funded multiplayer geography quiz game. In the classic "random drop" game mode, the players are dropped at a random Google Street View location. The players have to find out where they are and pin-point the most exact location on a map. It is a free alternative to Geoguessr.
What it’s like
Soft, unhurried and utterly unfussy: the whole experience is built around Google Street View's grainy, ordinary world, so you get sun-bleached dirt roads, rain-dark tarmac, overcast suburban streets and the flat, washed-out colour of car-cam photography, all framed in the browser's plain white interface. The sound is minimal, with light ambient noise and the occasional bird or passing engine doing most of the work. Rounds move at a steady, low-pressure pace: you look around, read signs and bollards and vegetation, drop a pin, and watch the scores settle. Its mood is quiet curiosity with a gentle competitive edge, nothing frantic or dark. There is no violence, gore or sexual content, and fear never enters the picture. It suits a lazy afternoon, a background tab while working, or a couple of rounds with friends on a call. It is for people who enjoy armchair travel, puzzling over small visual clues, and the calm pleasure of wandering unfamiliar places from a desk.
