The story

Ran and Leela are passionately in love with each other. The only problem is that their respective clans have been enemies for 500 years.

What it’s like

Saturated, painterly colour dominates this Sanjay Leela Bhansali film: blazing reds, marigold yellows and deep indigo nights set against sunbaked, dusty streets and the pale stone of a small desert town. Bhansali favours sweeping, choreographed camera moves, symmetrical framing and slow-motion pans through crowds, with frequent close-ups that hold on faces lit by lamp or firelight. Sound is loud and rhythmic: folk percussion, brass and big vocal numbers that often replace dialogue, with quieter moments of wind and footsteps when the lovers are alone. The vibe is sensual and operatic, a mix of passion, rivalry and grief, moving between bursts of exuberance and heavy, tragic stillness. Pacing is energetic, with dance sequences driving the story rather than pausing it. The emotional arc follows two stubborn, headstrong people whose defiance of their families builds toward an inevitable, tragic reckoning. Violence is present and occasionally bloody, including gunfire and a sharp, sudden death, while sexual content stays suggestive and restrained. Best for viewers who love romantic musicals, bold colour and emotionally big, heartbreaking love stories.
