The story
A look a the life of 19th century Indian painter Raja Ravi Varma.
What it’s like
Warm, saturated frames that borrow the palette of the oil portraits at its centre: deep vermilion silks, ochre and jewel-toned saris, lamplight pooling over studio easels and carved teak interiors. Scenes often hold still long enough for the composition to settle, with faces lit from one side like the paintings being made. Daylight through open courtyards gives way to candle and oil-lamp dark at night, and the period texture of brass, fabric and weathered wall feels tactile. The score leans on sitar and soft strings, with quiet gaps that let the room breathe. The mood is melancholy and reflective, with a slow, deliberate pace in which an artist's devotion and the public resistance to his work unfold in measured, intimate scenes. Sensual content and some nudity appear in the context of painting sessions, and conflict is conveyed through social pressure and argument rather than graphic violence. Suited to viewers who want a lush, painterly period drama, slow and contemplative, for an evening with the lights low.
