The story
More dark secrets are exposed in this addictive, true-crime fueled sequel when Pip finds herself in another deadly case. Pip is not a detective anymore. With the help of Ravi Singh, she released a true-crime podcast about the murder case they solved together last year. The podcast has gone viral, yet Pip insists her investigating days are behind her. But she will have to break that promise when someone she knows goes missing. Jamie Reynolds has disappeared, on the very same night the town hosted a memorial for the sixth-year anniversary of the deaths of Andie Bell and Sal Singh. The police won't do anything about it. And if they won't look for Jamie then Pip will, uncovering more of her town's dark secrets along the way... and this time everyone is listening. But will she find him before it's too late?
What it’s like
Brisk, chatty first-person narration with a restless, online-age energy: short chapters, text messages, transcript excerpts and case notes that make the pages feel like a shared document. Its mood is tense and claustrophobic rather than atmospheric, the sort of small English town where everyone has an opinion and a secret, and where the autumn nights feel colder once someone goes missing. The prose stays brisk and conversational, so the suspense comes from momentum and the constant sense that someone is listening. Violence is present but mostly off the page, with dread, grim discoveries and emotionally raw scenes rather than graphic detail. There is a slow-building romance and a thread about family strain and blended households, and the heroine's stubborn, self-doubting determination carries the emotional core. Best for readers who want a fast, page-turning mystery with a sharp, modern voice and a dark undercurrent, and who are comfortable with a teen protagonist facing real danger.
