The story
H2O: Just Add Water revolves around three teenage girls facing everyday teen problems with an added twist: they cope with the burden of growing a giant fin and transforming into mermaids whenever they come in contact with water.
What it’s like
Bright Australian coastal daylight does most of the work here: sunlit beaches, saltwater pools, a sparkling harbour town, and the warm, slightly glossy colour of mid-2000s children's television shot on digital video. The camera stays close and conversational, with plenty of medium shots and shoulder-level framing as three friends talk in kitchens, bedrooms and at the water's edge, and the transformations arrive as shimmering, bubbly effects set against bright turquoise. The score leans on upbeat pop-rock and easy, bouncy incidental music, so the mood is sunny and buoyant rather than eerie. Its vibe is breezy, wholesome and faintly sugary, with a light undertow of secrecy and friendship. It suits an easy weekend afternoon, a lazy summer evening, or a comfort rewatch while doing something with your hands. The pacing is episodic and unhurried, with each episode resolving its own small teenage dilemma, and the emotional register stays warm and reassuring. The girls' arcs centre on learning to trust one another and accept the strange change in their lives. Intensity is very low: mild peril and fear around secrecy, some teen romance and bickering, and no violence, gore or sexual content. It is for viewers who want gentle, cheerful fantasy with friendship at its heart.
