Happy Gilmore 2

Directed by Kyle Newacheck

The story

Happy Gilmore isn't done with golf — not by a long shot. Since his retirement after his first Tour Championship win, Gilmore returns to finance his daughter's ballet classes.

What it’s like

Bright, flat, cheerfully overlit daytime golf: sun-bleached fairways, saturated green turf, and the broadcast-sports look of wide establishing shots cut against tight, goofy close-ups of Sandler's face. The camera stays mostly conventional and unfussy, so the comedy lives in performance and timing rather than style, and the score leans on big, bouncy sports-movie cues that play straight for laughs. The sound is loud by design: crowd roars, announcers talking over absurd mishaps, slapstick thwacks and crashes. Its vibe is loose, brash and warmly silly, the kind of thing for a lazy Saturday afternoon, a group watch with friends, or a comfort rewatch when you want to laugh without thinking. Pacing is brisk and episodic, with sketch-like setpieces stacked one after another and a gentle, familiar arc of a washed-up competitor reclaiming his footing and his family. Violence is cartoonish and non-graphic, with pratfalls, bruises and rough-housing rather than gore, and there is some crude language and bawdy humour, along with a sad family backstory handled lightly. It suits fans of Sandler's big-hearted goofball comedy who like sports parody and anarchic set pieces.
