The story

A hard-nosed, hard-living Marine gunnery sergeant clashes with his superiors and his ex-wife as he takes command of a spoiled recon platoon with a bad attitude.

What it’s like

Hard, dusty daylight and a restrained, workmanlike camera define Heartbreak Ridge: Clint Eastwood frames bases, barracks and training fields in flat sun and washed-out colour, with long unhurried shots of men drilling in heat and the grit of a sun-bleached Carolina landscape. The sound is mostly boots, barked orders, rain on tin roofs and a brass-tinged score that swells for training montages and then recedes. Its vibe is gruff, wry and melancholy, a rough-edged, old-fashioned military drama that slowly warms into something quietly sentimental. The pacing is measured, with plenty of talk and bickering between scenes before the action arrives. Its central figure is a stubborn, damaged veteran who learns, grudgingly, to respect a band of unruly young soldiers, and his arc from cynicism toward loyalty carries most of the feeling. Violence is present but limited: there are rough training exercises, some profanity, and a brief, sharp combat sequence in the final act, with no gore and little lingering on injury. It suits a slow weekend afternoon, a rainy evening, or anyone who enjoys gruff mentors and soldier-camaraderie stories, particularly viewers wanting a grounded, unshowy war film.
