The story

Hellboy comes to England, where he must defeat Nimue, Merlin's consort and the Blood Queen. But their battle will bring about the end of the world, a fate he desperately tries to turn away.

What it’s like

Gritty, saturated, and loud: murky London streets under sodden grey skies, sickly green and rust-brown countryside, and bursts of arterial red in fights that are shot tight and handheld, with quick cuts and jittery zooms that make every brawl feel cramped and messy. Sound leans heavily on thudding percussion, grinding metal and crunching impacts, with pop-rock cues jammed in during the set pieces. The mood is crude, gleefully profane and restless, a rowdy blend of dark fantasy and buddy-comedy swagger that rarely lets up for breath. Expect frequent, graphic violence: gore, dismemberment, creature carnage and some brutal, bloody imagery, plus strong language, crude jokes and occasional sexual innuendo; the horror is more gross-out and visceral than eerie. It suits a loud, late-night watch with friends or a craving for chaotic, R-rated fantasy spectacle, and it is aimed at viewers who enjoy irreverent, high-energy monster mayhem rather than anyone wanting something gentle, quiet or restrained.
