The story
Having grown sick and tired of his centuries as Dracula's lackey, Renfield finds a new lease on life — and maybe even redemption — when he falls for feisty, perennially angry traffic cop Rebecca Quincy.
What it’s like
Saturated reds and sickly greens wash over a humid, neon-lit New Orleans, with kinetic camera moves, quick cuts and blood sprayed in bright, cartoonish arcs. Fight scenes are loud, messy and frequently gory, and the comedy leans on splatter and bug-munching grossness as much as on wisecracks. The mood is goofy, brash and high-energy, a rowdy late-night watch rather than a quiet one. The pacing is brisk, with the chaos broken up by lighter, warmer scenes between two lonely people, and the tone stays knowingly ridiculous. Violence is frequent, gory and mostly played for laughs, with some dark material about control and an abusive master, and no sexual content of note. This suits viewers who want a gleefully bloody, irreverent horror-comedy, not anything gentle or soothing. It fits fans of gonzo genre mashups and anyone who enjoys a comic underdog story set against vampire carnage.
