The story
Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Michael Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success soon reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease.
What it’s like
Dim, washed-out interiors give way to flashes of hard white clinical light and then to lurid neon-red and sickly green in the nighttime city, with shadowy, grainy night photography and frequent handheld swoops through rain-slick streets and dark laboratories. The look is glossy digital comic-book kinetic, all rapid cuts and smear-frame action, with a thudding synth-and-strings score that pushes the pace and little room for quiet. Its vibe is moody, frustrated pulp: a sad, sleek vampire origin that keeps tripping over its own ambitions. The tone swings between brooding and tongue-in-cheek, and the arc centres on a gifted, isolated doctor who wants to help others and finds his cure turning him into something he cannot control. Intensity is moderate: action violence with bloodless-to-light gore, some fang-and-hunger menace, and brief tension, but nothing sexual and no sustained cruelty. It suits a loose Friday night, background viewing with a bowl of popcorn, or a comic-fan's rainy afternoon. It is for people who enjoy superhero spectacle, dark creature features and a bit of glossy, overwrought drama, and who don't mind a story that wobbles more than it bites.
