The story

Pre-law student Marti Perkins' world is flipped upside down when she loses her scholarship, and realizes the only way she can stay in school is by reigniting her dormant teen gymnastic skills to win a place on Lancer University's legendary cheerleading team.

What it’s like

Bright, sun-saturated Southern daylight over campus lawns, red-clay fields and gym floors lit by cool fluorescents that give way to warm stadium evenings, with a glossy, polished digital look typical of a 2010 network drama. Camera work is steady and bouncy in the routine scenes, with quick cuts and playful whip pans during practice and tumbling sequences, and the music leans on upbeat pop and rock to keep the energy easy and kinetic. The vibe is breezy, sincere and lightly comic, a sunny sports-and-sorority-tinged comedy-drama with a warm, unforced sense of fun. It suits a lazy weekend afternoon, a comfort rewatch, or background viewing while folding laundry. Pacing is brisk, and the emotional throughline follows a determined young woman who must rebuild her confidence and find her place among a group of rivals who slowly become friends. The intensity is low: some catty rivalry, mild romantic tension, and occasional tears, with no violence and little that is dark or frightening. It is best for viewers who want an upbeat, gentle story about ambition, teamwork and friendship with a light touch of sports spectacle.
