The story

Gon, a young boy who lives on Whale Island, dreams of becoming a Hunter like his father, who left when Gon was still young.

What it’s like

Clean, saturated 2D animation with bold outlines, bright island greens and sea blues giving way to moody, shadowed palettes once the stakes rise, and a shift in look for the darker arcs that feels deliberate. Action sequences are kinetic and inventive, built around clear visual rules and quick cuts, while quieter scenes lean on open skies, rolling landscapes and small domestic details that give the world a lived-in warmth. The score swings between bouncy adventure themes and tense, pulsing strings during battles, and the voice performances carry a lot of the emotional weight. The pace is episodic and generous: each arc opens a new town, rival or puzzle, and character bonds build slowly across long stretches of training and travel. The emotional register runs from playful and sincere to sombre, with a steady current of friendship and loyalty. Violence is frequent and often stylised, with real injuries, blood and some grim cruelty in darker arcs, though it never tips into prolonged gore. Suited to viewers who enjoy a long, character-driven adventure with a comfort-rewatch feel and don't mind intermittent intensity.
