The story

Firefighters Chuck Ford and Larry Valentine are guy's guys, loyal to the core—which is why when widower Larry asks Chuck to pose as his lover so that he can get domestic partner benefits for his kids, his buddy agrees. However, things get dicey when a bureaucrat comes calling, and the boys are forced to present a picture of domestic bliss.

What it’s like

Broad, bright studio-comedy daylight: sunlit Brooklyn firehouses, sodium-lit bars at dusk, and the flat, glossy look of mid-2000s mainstream comedy, with bright fills, saturated fire-engine reds and wide two-shots that let the leads' reactions play out in full. The camera mostly sits back and waits for the gag to land, and the score is bouncy and cheerful, with a pop-rock swagger during the bluster and softer strings when the friendship deepens. The vibe is raucous but warm, a feel-good comedy with lots of noise and a big heart underneath. Pacing is brisk and sitcom-like, with scenes built around escalating misunderstandings, and the arc follows two stubborn, macho men slowly learning to trust each other and see past their own prejudices. Intensity is low: there is brawling and a few sharp, crude jokes, some sexual innuendo and a lot of anti-gay ribbing that the story turns on its head, but no gore and no real cruelty. It suits a loud, easy Friday night or a group watch, for people who want big laughs, romantic-comedy warmth, and a gentle lesson in friendship.
