The story

Big rig ice road driver Mike McCann travels to Nepal to scatter his late brother’s ashes on Mt. Everest. While on a packed tour bus traversing the deadly 12,000 ft. terrain of the infamous Road to the Sky, McCann and his mountain guide encounter a group of mercenaries and must fight to save themselves, the busload of innocent travelers, and the local villagers’ homeland.

What it’s like

Wide, exposed shots of switchback roads clinging to Himalayan cliffs set the stage, with the thin air and vertical drops making the landscape feel like a constant threat. The tone is that of a lean, earnest action thriller: suspenseful and urgent, with a streak of old-fashioned mercenary swagger and a sincere, optimistic streak running underneath. Much of the pacing comes from confined spaces, a packed tour bus and a narrow road with nowhere to go, so tension builds in tight quarters and then breaks into bursts of hand-to-hand fighting and gunfire. The score leans on driving, tense rhythms that keep momentum high between set pieces. Violence is frequent and action-driven, with gunfights and brawls that are more kinetic than gory, though it is not light viewing. Emotionally the story stays on a grieving, stubborn protagonist who finds purpose in protecting strangers, and on the bonds that form under pressure. It suits a Friday night with the lights low, or a rainy afternoon when you want a sturdy, straightforward genre film. It is for viewers who enjoy a hard-nosed hero, big stunts, and a sense of danger that never fully lets up.
