The story

ITGmania is a cross-platform rhythm game and engine. Similar to Dance Dance Revolution, it is often played with dance mats or pads. Although originally created to simulate the now defunct game, In The Groove, it has since grown to be a completely community driven effort providing regular new content and updates.

What it’s like

Bright, flat arcade colour under clean UI panels, with arrows and receptors scrolling up in vivid, clicky rhythm: the look is functional and a little retro rather than cinematic. The sound is the point, a catalogue of pop, electronic and dance tracks where each step lands on a snare or a synth stab, and the pads thud back underfoot. Play is brisk and bouncy, with short songs, quick restarts and a steady stream of community-made stepcharts that keep the menus feeling lived-in. Its mood is upbeat and goofy, the warm energy of a friendly arcade on a weekend night, with no narrative or violence at all, only the occasional sweat and fail-screen groan. It suits a sweaty half-hour after work, a living-room party with friends passing the controller, or a solo session to shake off a grey afternoon. Players who love dance-floor momentum, pattern-hunting, and tinkering with their own setup, from PC or a Linux box with a pad, will feel most at home here.
