The story

Fourteen year old breakdancer and mischievous delinquent, Jonah Takalua, returns from Tonga to start a new life at Holy Cross High School. Dominating the playground with his gang Fobba-licious, amusing himself with endless filfthy jokes and a schoolyard rivalry with the Rangas, Jonah challenges the school system, getting himself into more trouble than ever before.

What it’s like

Bright, flat Australian daylight over a suburban school, shot in the loose, observational style of a mockumentary: handheld wobble, awkward zooms, and straight-to-camera confessionals framed against plain walls. The palette is sunburnt and unglamorous, with school uniforms, corridors, and asphalt playgrounds, and the sound is pop-heavy music, schoolyard chatter, and the self-satisfied voice of its lead. Its vibe is cringe-comedy with a sharp, uneasy edge, the kind of show you watch with a wince and a laugh on a lazy afternoon or during a late-night binge when you want something absurd and talky rather than sweet. Episodes move briskly, each built around a clumsy escalation that lands in an awkward silence, and the emotional register swings between smug bravado and sudden vulnerability, with characters who are more needy and foolish than cruel. Intensity is moderate: frequent crude humour, sexual innuendo, swearing, playground bullying and rivalry, and some scuffles and mild peril, but no gore and little real menace. It suits viewers who enjoy uncomfortable comedy, mockumentary satire, and performances that stay in character for the whole joke.
