The story

Earth is decimated after intergalactic tyrant Darkseid has devastated the Justice League in a poorly executed war by the DC Super Heroes. Now the remaining bastions of good – the Justice League, Teen Titans, Suicide Squad and assorted others – must regroup, strategize and take the war to Darkseid in order to save the planet and its surviving inhabitants.

What it’s like

Hard-edged 2D animation with inky black shadows, saturated blasts of Apokolips orange and hellfire red, and a grim, rubble-strewn palette where ruined skylines and smoldering cities fill the frame. Action sequences are kinetic and fast-cut, with sweeping camera moves, heavy impacts and bursts of magic that flare across dark sky, while quieter scenes sit in dim interiors and bleak wastelands lit by sickly glows. The sound is a loud, percussive mix of punches, energy blasts and orchestral swells, broken by moments of tense silence. Vibe: bleak, bitter, apocalyptic. It suits a late-night, lights-off watch when you want something dark and fast rather than comforting. Pacing is brisk and relentless, with little breathing room between battles. Tone is cynical and mournful, and the heroes are shown weary, compromised and at odds with each other as they try to hold on to hope. Violence is frequent and graphic, with bloody fights, explosions and deaths, plus some crude language and dark humor; there is no sexual content. It is for fans of DC animation who want a grim, adult-oriented superhero story rather than a gentle or lighthearted one.
