The story
Determined to ensure Superman's ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne aligns forces with Diana Prince with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions.
What it’s like
Wide, crushingly scaled widescreen frames dominated by desaturated steel-blue skies, ash-grey ruins and cold, bluish night, with occasional warm gold flaring through the gloom when a hero steps into the light. Snyder's signature is slow-motion impact, dense digital compositing and tight low-angle hero shots, all shot in a glossy, grainy-textured digital look, while the score swells with Junkie XL's pounding percussion and mournful choral strings. The mood is grandiose and elegiac, a long, heavy-hearted epic that moves in bursts of set-piece spectacle between quieter scenes of grief and reluctant camaraderie. Violence is frequent and stylized: sustained superhero battles, city-scale destruction, bloody but largely bloodless combat, and a brief, creature-driven menace that lands as spectacle rather than gore. Its emotional core is a fractured team slowly learning to trust each other and to honor a lost friend. Best suited to fans of big-canvas comic-book spectacle who don't mind a three-and-a-half-hour runtime, and to anyone wanting melancholy weight behind the action rather than something light or gentle.
