The story

Unfolding through a course of a night in Mumbai, Kaalakaandi showcases three parallel tracks — a man who discovers he has terminal illness decides to let go of his principles and live a little; a woman involved in a hit-and-run seeks redemption and two goons must decide if they can trust each other.

What it’s like

Restless, sodium-lit Mumbai nights: wet asphalt reflecting taxi headlights, cramped flats in tungsten lamplight, and the sweaty brightness of a late-night diner, all shot with a loose, roving camera that keeps circling its characters. Its rhythm is brisk and crosscutting, with jabs of jagged editing and a jumpy, jazzy score that tips into a playful, knowing swagger. The vibe is sardonic and frantic, a dark comedy that feels like a bad night turning slowly absurd. It suits a late evening with friends, a wide-awake Friday when you want something sharp rather than soothing. Intensity runs moderate: some sudden violence, a hit-and-run aftermath, crime-world menace and rough language, but the bloodshed is brief and the mood stays more caper than horror. It is for viewers who enjoy ensemble chaos, morally slippery characters, and comedy with an undercurrent of unease.
