The story
When oil is discovered in 1920s Oklahoma under Osage Nation land, the Osage people are murdered one by one—until the FBI steps in to unravel the mystery.
What it’s like
Warm amber and dust-brown palettes dominate, with the prairie opening onto vast, sun-bleached skies and interiors lit by lamplight and wood-stove glow, all shot in long, unhurried takes that let faces and rooms settle. Scorsese's camera moves with deliberate patience, often holding on a face while the frame fills with stillness, and the period texture of cars, clapboard houses and oil derricks gives the whole film a weathered, almost tactile grain. The score is restrained and mournful, with low strings and long silences that let unease creep in, and the rhythm is slow, watchful and accumulative rather than propulsive. The mood is a heavy, creeping dread shaded with grief and quiet moral unease, suited to a late evening alone or a serious, attentive viewing. Its emotional arc follows a marriage bent toward betrayal and a community pressed by greed, with a final act that turns toward reckoning. Violence is present and occasionally sudden, including murder and poisoning, but it is mostly implied or handled without gore; the menace is psychological and sustained. Made for viewers who want a long, sober historical drama with weight, not escapism.
