The story
What it’s like
Warm, sprawling and sensual, with the cadence of a family saga told like an anecdote at a long dinner table: fluent sentences that drift between sun-drenched estate gardens, dusty provincial roads and the cool, shadowed rooms of a mansion where the dead seem to linger. Its magical realism is matter-of-fact, so a clairvoyant's visions and objects that float arrive with the same calm as the weather. The vibe is melancholic and sweeping, a slow unspooling of memory and decline in which the house itself feels like a breathing presence. Pacing is leisurely and digressive, covering generations and shifting political tides, and the emotional register moves between tender humour and creeping dread. Intensity is significant: political violence, torture, sexual assault and cruelty within the family recur, and some scenes land hard, though they are rarely lingered on for gore. It suits an unhurried read over several weekends, for lovers of intergenerational epics, lyrical voice and the blurred line between the real and the uncanny, who can sit with a domineering man's slow, painful fall.
