The story

What it’s like

Dense, atmospheric prose that moves between Barcelona's gothic back streets and its sun-bleached postwar streets, with the old city rendered in lamplight, rain-darkened stone, shadowed bookshops and the faint gritty dust of an ageing library. The voice is a first-person reminiscence, warm and slightly wistful, which gives the whole book a settled, confessional glow. Its vibe is gothic melancholy with a romantic pulse: the kind of book best read slowly on a rainy weekend, or late at night with a single lamp on. The pacing is unhurried in its digressions and then suddenly tightens into mystery, with nested stories opening inside one another like Russian dolls. Emotionally it is tender and tragic, following a young bookish boy as he is drawn into a love story whose echoes reach across decades, and the arcs are about grief, inheritance and the slow discovery of who one's father really was. Intensity is moderate: there is some violence and menace, including murder and a sinister antagonist, but it is handled with restraint and no gore, and the romance is chaste and sensual rather than explicit. It suits readers who love literary mysteries, Gothic atmosphere and novels about the enchantment of books.
