The story

Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos takes you on an adventure: save the dying king and stop the evil sorceress Scotia’s Dark Army. Your band of heroes will travel through a vast fantasy word full of mysterious places, dangerous monsters, and hidden treasures in a quest to find a way to defeat the immortal evil enchantress and save the world.

What it’s like

Hand-painted, dim and richly coloured, with the look of an old fantasy illustration brought to life: torchlit stone corridors, murky forest clearings, dungeons lit by glowing runes and the flicker of spell effects. The 1993 DOS-era pixel art has a warm, slightly grainy texture, and the first-person view moves in chunky grid steps, so exploring feels deliberate and tactile. Sound is a looping, mood-setting score of low drones, mournful brass and chiming mystery, with the clank of weapons, creaking doors and crackling magic punctuating long stretches of quiet wandering. Its vibe is brooding but adventurous, a warm, slightly eerie world-map quest best suited to an evening alone with the lights low, or a patient session of mapping rooms and hunting for secrets. The pace is methodical: combat is turn-based and fights are brief, with a steady rhythm of exploration, puzzles and party management. Violence is cartoonish and moderate, with monsters falling in puffs of colour rather than gore, and the fear comes from atmosphere and sudden ambushes rather than horror. Its heroes grow from green adventurers into capable champions, a gentle, earnest arc about loyalty and courage. Made for players who love old-school character building, party-based RPGs and dungeon crawling with a storybook charm.
