The story

Players venture out from the familiar Kingdom of Ehb into the savage realm of Aranna. The result is a new campaign spanning nine areas, ranging from lush jungles to arctic wastelands, as players prepare to do battle with more than 100 different creatures. Enhancements to the original include 50 additional spells to wield, such as Diminution, Animal Rage, Zorkon's Bonecrusher, and the Orb of Fire, and the ability to play as a new character: the half-giant, who uses brute force to wear down his foes. As the battles become more dangerous and the characters more skilled in the finer points of hack-and-slash combat, the rewards will grow more enticing.

What it’s like

Lush, saturated greens of jungle canopy give way to bleak, snow-white wastes in this isometric fantasy world, with a camera pulled back over the action and the landscape rendered in painterly 3D. The soundtrack is a rolling orchestral score, and the cutscenes arrive as compressed video clips with a slightly soft, dated sheen. The feel is busy but unhurried: real-time clashes of swords, bows and two-handed weapons punctuate long stretches of wandering, looting and mending potions in between. Violence is constant, cartoonish fantasy combat with creatures bursting apart in showers of loot, and it is never lingered on or made grisly. Its rhythm is that of a rainy-afternoon escape: short bursts of fighting, a satisfying climb in gear and skill, and a steady sense of progress. It suits a long weekend session, a comfort replay, or a loose evening with friends in multiplayer. Fans of classic loot-driven action RPGs who enjoy a sprawling, familiar fantasy map will find a warm, low-stakes adventure here.
