The story

Seth Meyers, who is "Saturday Night Live's" longest serving anchor on the show's wildly popular "Weekend Update," takes over as host of NBC's "Late Night" — home to A-list celebrity guests, memorable comedy and the best in musical talent. As the Emmy Award-winning head writer for "SNL," Meyers has established a reputation for sharp wit and perfectly timed comedy, and has gained fame for his spot-on jokes and satire. Meyers takes his departure from "SNL" to his new post at "Late Night," as Jimmy Fallon moves to "The Tonight Show".

What it’s like

Bright studio light on a band-lit stage, with a desk-and-couch set framed in clean, symmetrical wide shots and cut quickly between host, guests and the audience's laughter. The look is glossy and broadcast-polished, with saturated blues and warm stage lamps, and the sound is a live audience swelling and breaking around a house band's brassy stings and a monologue delivered in a crisp, rapid-fire cadence. Its vibe is brisk, witty and upbeat, the kind of thing you put on at the end of a workday or while winding down before bed, when you want topical jokes and a few celebrity conversations rather than anything heavy. Pacing is segmented and fast, with sketches, desk chats and musical moments arriving in tidy blocks, and the emotional register stays light and playful, the host working as a steady, good-humored presence who builds quick rapport with guests. Intensity is very low: sharp political and celebrity satire, some innuendo and crude humour, no violence and nothing frightening. It suits people who want a dependable, funny hour of current events and celebrity banter, and fans of sketch comedy and talk formats who enjoy a host with a sharp, precise sense of timing.
