The story

A late-night live television sketch comedy and variety show created by Lorne Michaels. The show's comedy sketches, which parody contemporary culture and politics, are performed by a large and varying cast of repertory and newer cast members. Each episode is hosted by a celebrity guest, who usually delivers an opening monologue and performs in sketches with the cast, and features performances by a musical guest.

What it’s like

Bright studio lighting on a stage set that shifts from one sketch to the next: a fluorescent-white news desk, a cramped apartment, a fake talk-show couch, all framed mostly in wide, steady shots with the camera holding on the performers so their timing lands. Under it runs the constant hum of a live studio audience, laughter rolling in waves and sometimes cutting off into a held breath when a bit goes sideways. The energy is brisk and unpredictable, the pacing a blur of short bits, cold opens, monologues and musical interludes, with the occasional sketch that stretches into something stranger and more absurd. Its tone is irreverent, topical and warm-chaotic, the feel of a Saturday night spent half-watching with friends and laughing at whatever comes next. Violence is absent, sexual humor and crude language are common but usually played for jokes rather than intensity, and any fear is only ever mock-scary. It suits a late-night watch with a drink, background noise while tidying up on a weekend, or a loose, gag-by-gag comfort rewatch. It is for people who enjoy sketch comedy, celebrity cameos and the rough, communal thrill of live television.
