The story
Phileas Fogg, a very punctual man had broken into an argument while conversing about the recent bank robbery. To keep his word of proving that he would travel around the world in 80 days and win the bet, he sets on a long trip, where he is joined by a few other people on the way. A wonderful adventure is about to begin!
What it’s like
Brisk and sunny, with the restless brightness of a 19th-century travel adventure: steamship decks in open sea air, crowded railway carriages rattling across plains, elephants and palanquins in the heat, and a clockwork sense of time ticking through every chapter. Verne's prose is crisp, often a little wry, with lists of timetables, currencies and routes that read like a travelling man's logbook and give the story a bracing, tidy rhythm. The mood is light and optimistic, a cheerful comedy of manners running on the thrill of motion, with little real menace and nothing graphic; danger comes as storms, shipwreck scares and misunderstandings rather than gore or cruelty. The tone stays warm even when things go wrong, and the central pleasure is watching a stiff, unflappable gentleman soften a little as he gathers an unlikely companion along the way. It suits a long-haul flight, a lazy afternoon with a cup of tea, or a read-aloud for children and grown readers alike. It is especially good for anyone who wants a gentle, low-stakes adventure with a sense of wonder about the wider world and no violence to speak of.
