The story
In 1989, a misunderstood teenager has a high school crush — who just happens to be a handsome corpse! After a set of playfully horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a murderous journey to find love, happiness…and a few missing body parts along the way.
What it’s like
Pastel pinks, mint greens and bruised purple nights give this 1989 world a candy-coloured gothic look, with a cemetery under a full moon, a bedroom full of Victorian-style oddities, and a bright, synth-heavy 80s soundtrack that jangles against the dark. The camera moves briskly and playfully, with snappy edits and deliberately stagey compositions that suit its comic timing. The vibe is macabre and giddy, a sardonic teen romance with a deadpan streak. The violence is frequent and cartoonishly gory: dismemberment, blood spatter and corpse mishaps played for laughs rather than dread, with some crude sexual humour and a sex scene that is more awkward than explicit. A lonely outsider slowly gains confidence, and her tangled, morbid romance drives the arc. It suits a Friday night with friends or a late-night watch for fans of Heathers and Beetlejuice who want dark humour and don't mind a lot of gruesome, tongue-in-cheek bloodshed.
