The story

As one of the thousands of Japanese students afflicted with "chunibyo," a state where they're so desperate to stand out that they've convinced themselves that they have secret knowledge and hidden powers, Yuta spent most of his middle school years living in a complete fantasy world. He's finally managing to overcome his delusions but his chunibyo have attracted the attentions of another sufferer, and she's decided that this makes him her soul mate.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated cel animation with exaggerated fantasy sequences that break into flashy action, glowing sigils, and sudden stylised flourishes, then drop back into flat, sunlit suburban classrooms and stairwells painted in soft pastels. The palette swings between warm afternoon yellows and cool, moody blues during the daydream interludes, and the camera leans on quick cuts, snap zooms and comic freeze-frames rather than long takes. Sound is bouncy and playful: a jaunty pop-rock score, sudden orchestral swells for the characters' imagined battles, and plenty of voice-driven banter. Its vibe is giddy, self-aware and warmly ridiculous, the kind of show that suits a lazy weekend afternoon, a light comfort rewatch, or an evening when you want to laugh without thinking hard. The pacing is brisk and episodic, with the comedy spiking on embarrassment and escalating daydreams. Emotionally it stays upbeat, following a teenager who is learning to step out of his past self-image while a classmate's enthusiasm pulls him toward something sincere and tender. Mild in violence, with fantasy battles that are cartoonish and bloodless; there is some teen romantic awkwardness and no real menace. Suited to viewers who enjoy anime comedy, school-life warmth and playful send-ups of otaku culture.
