The story

While on a field trip to the Tokyo Tower, three middle school girls suddenly find themselves in another world and must save its princess to return home.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated cel animation with flat painted backgrounds, sparkling magic effects and big sweeping fantasy vistas: a 1994 anime look that trades grit for storybook color, with glittering transformation sequences and robot and monster designs drawn with bold outlines. Its sound is an upbeat orchestral and synth score full of heroic brass and chiming bells, punctuated by idol-style theme songs. The mood is buoyant and earnest, warm rather than gloomy, though the middle stretch turns noticeably darker, with genuine tragedy and emotional weight landing in later episodes. Violence is cartoonish and frequent in fights involving monsters and battles, with some bloodless peril and a few sad deaths; it never tips into gore. Pacing is episodic and brisk, with each girl's friendship and growing courage carrying the arc from nervous schoolgirls to determined heroines, and light romantic threads running beneath. Good for a comfort rewatch with a nostalgic streak, a lazy weekend afternoon, or viewers who love magical-girl adventures with mecha spectacle and a few tears along the way.
