The story

Hajime Nagumo and his high school class are suddenly summoned to a fantastical land as heroes. But while most of his classmates have powerful stats and abilities, Hajime does not. Underappreciated and unprepared, he tumbles into the depths of a monster-infested dungeon where voracity and sacrifice are his only options. To thrive in this savage world, he’ll have no choice but to welcome the abyss.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated anime fantasy with clean cel shading, glossy highlights and bold primary colours, shifting into murky dungeon gloom: torchlit stone corridors, cold blue-green cave light, and sudden flashes of blood red when fights break out. The camera favours quick cuts, dynamic action framing and wide establishing shots of castles and forests, with a bombastic orchestral score and punchy J-pop openings that give way to moody synth-tinged tension underground. The mood is brisk, goofy and escapist, with a hard edge that tips into grim survival in the later stretches. Violence is frequent and stylised: swordplay, magic blasts and monster fights, with some bloody wounds and graphic deaths, plus fan-service moments, camp nudity and suggestive humour around the harem cast. Its emotional register is earnest and wry, following an underdog who is written off and gradually grows into a feared fighter, so it suits a weekend binge or a late-night watch for anyone who enjoys power fantasy with a dark streak. Not gentle, not one for young or squeamish viewers.
