The story
An insecure but courageous and intelligent teen named Peter Parker, a new student of Midtown High, is bitten by a radioactive spider and given powers. He becomes a hero named Spider-Man after the death of his uncle and he must adapt to this new way of life.
What it’s like
Bright, saturated cartoon colour over bold inked outlines, with comic-panel framing, speech-bubble captions and kinetic swings through sunny Queens and Manhattan skylines that feel like flipping through a comic at speed. Upbeat and busy, it runs on quick banter, jokes landing between fights, and a steady current of teenage awkwardness. Its tone is playful and warm, with a grief-tinged undercurrent around a boy who is trying to hold school, friends and a secret double life together. The action is cartoonish and frequent, with punches, crashes and villains in escalating showdowns, but the blows are bloodless and the peril stays light, so there is no gore and little that truly frightens. Each episode is brisk and self-contained enough for a weekday-evening watch, or background while doing homework or drawing. It suits kids and families, teens who want a fun, optimistic superhero world, and adults who like animated comics with a generous sense of humour and heart.
