The story
A mild-mannered bank executive mentors a teenage con artist and tries to make a career change as a doughnut merchant.
What it’s like
Bright, ordinary-looking suburban comedy with a light, sitcom-style feel, the kind of picture that plays easily on a laptop with the sound low. The tone is breezy and self-deprecating, with some crude jokes and a steady run of awkward social set-pieces rather than anything stylised or dreamlike. Its middle-aged protagonist is a buttoned-up man pulled into an unexpected friendship with a sharp-tongued teenager, and the arc is about a stiff, rule-bound person loosening up and reconsidering what he wants from his life. Romance and marital fallout run alongside the comedy, so there is adultery and some sexual innuendo, plus drug and marijuana references and a moment of physical injury that is played for laughs. The violence is minor and cartoonish, with no gore and no real menace. It suits a lazy weekend afternoon, a light comfort watch, or a low-stakes evening with friends. It is for viewers who want a warm, mildly raunchy comedy with an easygoing heart and no real darkness.
