The story
In an elegant Spanish-style apartment building in the trendy Melrose neighborhood of Los Angeles, a diverse group of 20-somethings have formed a close-knit surrogate family. However, when a bloody body is found floating in the courtyard pool, the police soon discover that almost everyone had a reason to want the deceased out of the way.
What it’s like
Bright, sun-washed Los Angeles daylight and glossy nighttime pool lights give this 2009 revival a sleek, high-gloss look: stucco courtyards in Spanish-style apartment blocks, pale poolside loungers, cocktail-bar glow, and a steady rotation of designer interiors and convertible-friendly boulevards. The camera moves quickly through close, chatty group scenes, with handheld energy in party sequences and a pop-driven soundtrack that keeps the pace bouncy. Its vibe is sun-drenched, soapy and buoyant, with a mystery running underneath the flirtation and rivalry, the kind of watch that suits a lazy weekend, a comfort binge while cooking, or a late-evening scroll through a season. Storylines swing between romance, career ambition and backstabbing, with friendships tested and reconciled in quick cycles. Intensity is moderate: a violent death opens the mystery, and there is some sexual content, arguments and emotional cruelty, but no graphic gore and little lingering menace. It is for viewers who want a glossy, melodramatic, low-to-mid-stakes soap with a whodunit hook and plenty of young-adult Hollywood styling.
