The story

The Men in Black have always protected the Earth from the scum of the universe. In this new adventure, they tackle their biggest, most global threat to date: a mole in the Men in Black organization.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated studio daylight carries most of this film: sunlit London streets, Parisian café terraces, glossy hotel lobbies and the washed-out glare of the Sahara, all rendered in clean digital colour with a polished, blockbuster sheen. Camera moves are fluid and busy, with sweeping drone-style establishing shots, quick whip pans during chases and a lot of kinetic cutting in the fight scenes. The score is brassy and jaunty, dropping into synth-driven action beats, and the alien creature designs are loud, cartoonish and bright. The vibe is breezy, cheeky and high-energy, a playful popcorn ride rather than anything moody or reflective, best suited to a lazy weekend afternoon or a light evening with friends. Its pacing is brisk and it leans on banter, with a buddy-cop rapport between two agents who spar, tease and gradually earn each other's trust. Violence is frequent and cartoonish: punches, gunfights and alien-blasting action with bloodless, mostly comic impact, and no real gore or sexual content. Tension is light and never sustained dread. It suits viewers who want fast, funny, undemanding sci-fi action with a crowd-pleasing charm.
