The story
To gatunek zagrożony wymarciem. Aczkolwiek w powszechnej opinii to gad najbardziej wredny.
What it’s like
Sharp, wry and lightly bloody, this is a Polish fantasy collection with the cheerful grit of a tavern tale told by someone who has seen too many monsters. The prose is brisk and sardonic, full of dry asides, and the sensory world is earthy: mud on boots, smoke from campfires, damp mountain caves, the clatter of cheap armour and the stink of rotting carcasses. Its voice does most of the work, moving between tense action and deadpan humour so that a grim moment can turn on a single ironic line. Vibe: rough-edged, mordantly funny, quietly melancholic underneath, the kind of read that suits a rainy evening with a cup of tea, or a long train journey where you want something you can dip in and out of. The pacing is episodic and quick, with short scenes and a looser, almost folkloric shape, and the emotional register is wry rather than sentimental. Violence is frequent and matter-of-fact, with monsters killed in bloody, unglamorous fights and some crude, sometimes sexual humour; fear is brief and mostly played for tension rather than horror. Not gentle, but not gratuitously gory. Best for readers who enjoy irreverent, morally grey fantasy, sharp dialogue, and a hero who is more weary professional than chosen one.
