The story

Mobil 1 Rally Championship (officially called Mobil 1 British Rally Championship, unofficially nicknamed Rally Championship 2000) is a rally video game which is part of the Rally Championship series. The game was released for Windows and PlayStation on 31 December 1999. It is developed by Magnetic Fields and published by Actualize. The PC version is notable for the stages being based around real-life Ordnance Survey maps. Magnetic Fields exists no more. After the Network-Q RAC Rally Championship (1996), it is a sequel to the International Rally Championship (1997). It features 22 cars and 36 tracks, drivable in two directions: Simulation and Arcade.

What it’s like

Hard-edged early-2000s rally sim look: grey-green British moorland, hedgerow-lined lanes and drizzle-soaked forest tracks rendered in chunky polygonal car bodies and flat, low-resolution textures, with the PC version's stages built from real Ordnance Survey map data so the country feels laid out as it actually is. Light is overcast and pale for most of the run, with weather that turns roads slick and dim, and the engine noise, gravel spray and co-driver's clipped callouts carry the atmosphere more than any score. Vibe: earnest, unpretentious and a little lonely, the feel of a dull winter afternoon spent chasing a personal best. It suits a rainy weekend session, a solo late-evening run, or a split-screen bout with a friend on the PlayStation. Pacing is methodical, built around memorising corners and nursing a car through mud and tarmac, and there is no real emotional arc beyond steady improvement. Intensity is low: crashes and wrecked cars appear, but there is no violence, gore or cruelty. It is for players who enjoy simulation-leaning driving, licensed machinery and the quiet satisfaction of a clean stage.
