The story
Cosmic Era 71. Mankind has developed into two subspecies: Naturals, who reside on Earth, and Coordinators, genetically enhanced humans capable of withstanding the rigors of space who inhabit orbital colonies known as PLANTs. The story revolves around a young Coordinator named Kira Yamato, who becomes involved in the war between the two races after a neutral space colony secretly developing mobile suits for the Earth Alliance is attacked by the PLANTs' military force, ZAFT.
What it’s like
Bright, saturated anime hues sit against stark space-blue and steel-grey, with the cockpit glow and warm interior light of the Archangel doing much of the emotional work. Battles are rendered in crisp cel-shaded animation: beams streak across black void, mobile suits lurch and burn, and the camera pulls back to show scale against empty starfields and drifting debris, while quieter episodes linger on ordinary corridors, galley tables and dim bunks. The score swings between orchestral swells and driving electronic pulses in combat, then softens into piano and sung ballads during downtime. Pacing is serialized and uneven, with long stretches of shipboard friction and romance broken by sharp, sudden action. The register is earnest and melodramatic, with an extended arc of former friends pulled into opposing sides, loyalty tested, and grief allowed to sit. Intensity is moderate to high: frequent mecha combat with explosions and dead pilots, some graphic death and bloodless but harrowing war-crime imagery, plus strong themes of prejudice and genocide; sexual content is limited to kissing and implication. It suits fans of real-robot war stories and long character dramas who can tolerate heavy emotion, and rewatchers who enjoy its sprawl and romance across a long sitting.
