The story
A washed-up '80s pop star gets a chance at a comeback when reigning pop diva Cora Corman invites him to write & record a duet with her, but there's a problem--Alex hasn't written a song in years; he's never written lyrics and he has to come up with a hit in a matter of days.
What it’s like
Bright, sunny Los Angeles and New York surfaces give this romcom an easygoing, mid-2000s studio gloss: warm daylight through apartment windows, pastel wardrobes, and bubblegum pop-video colour in the concert and studio sequences that contrast with the lived-in clutter of a small flat with a dusty piano. The score leans on jaunty synth-pop reconstructions and gentle piano ballads, and the songwriting scenes, with a sleepy-eyed hero hunched over a keyboard and a heroine who fusses over words, keep the rhythm conversational and unhurried. Its vibe is light, sunny and lovingly silly, a feel-good comedy with a soft heart. It suits a lazy weekend afternoon, a comfort rewatch, or an evening when you want to laugh without thinking too hard. The emotional register stays bright and affectionate, following a faded star and a self-doubting writer slowly learning to trust each other and themselves. Intensity is minimal: mild innuendo and some crude jokes, with no violence and no real fear or cruelty. It is for people who want a warm, funny romance with catchy tunes and a gentle, uplifting finish.
