The story

Following the climactic battle against the King of Shadows, you awaken alone and stranded deep beneath the earth. A dark hunger grows within you, threatening to devour your very soul. Will you fight against the hunger within or will you embrace it, revelling in your newfound power? Set in harsh, spirit-rich Rashemen, near the powerful nation of Thay, Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer presents players with an exciting new 20-30+ hour campaign filled with meaningful choices, rich characters, and surprising outcomes. Continue the adventure of your Neverwinter Nights 2 character or create a completely new epic hero - no previous Neverwinter Nights experience required. Hundreds of new gameplay options include epic levels; feats, spells, races, and classes; powerful weapons, armour, and crafting options; and hordes of diverse creatures.

What it’s like

Dim, fog-heavy caverns and wind-scoured highlands give this RPG a murky, painterly look, with torchlit stone, sickly violet spell glow, and misty Rashemen valleys rendered in the fixed-camera, isometric framing of an older tabletop-style RPG. Its soundtrack leans on low strings, drifting choir and tense percussion during fights, while combat itself is a clatter of swords, incantations and the thud of summoned creatures. The vibe is brooding, cerebral and slightly eerie, a sort of dreamy dread that suits a long evening at the desk, a rainy weekend, or a patient session of reading dialogue trees while a cup of tea goes cold. Pacing is deliberate: long stretches of exploration and conversation punctuated by tactical battles that reward pausing to plan, and characters whose arcs turn on the pull between self-control and appetite for power, with companions who challenge or indulge your choices. Violence is frequent and stylised, with blades, spells and some grisly creature deaths, but no gore-heavy focus; there is suggestive dialogue and dark themes like necromancy and possession. It is written for players who enjoy deep character customisation, party micromanagement and morally grey storytelling more than fast action.
