The story
The history of the Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is now so complicated that every time I tell it I contradict myself… The publication of this omnibus edition seemed like a good opportunity to set the record straight — or at least firmly cooked.” Reissued to coincide with Mostly Harmless, includes A Guide to the Guide and notes on How to Leave the Planet. Contains: - [The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy](https://openlibrary.org/works/OL2163649W/The_Hitch_Hiker's_Guide_to_the_Galaxy) - [The Restaurant at the End of the Universe][2] - [Life, the Universe and Everything][3] - [So long, and thanks for all the fish][4] [1]: https://openlibrary.org/works/OL2163721W [2]: https://openlibrary.org/works/OL2163720W [3]: https://openlibrary.org/works/OL2163716W [4]: https://openlibrary.org/works/OL2163719W
What it’s like
Brisk, breezy, and deliberately absurd, with a voice that sounds like a dry British narrator who has been up too late and is enjoying himself. The prose is short-sentenced and full of throwaway asides, footnote-style digressions and flat deadpan understatement, so a page can turn from the end of the world to a joke about towels in a few lines. Vibe: wry, cheerful, faintly bewildered. It suits a lazy afternoon, a long-haul flight, or a comfort reread when you want to laugh without having to care much about the stakes. The universe here is cosmic and sprawling, but the emotional register stays light; the central figure is an ordinary, slightly hapless Englishman swept through space by accident, and his arc is mostly a gentle drift from bemused passenger toward a kind of unbothered acceptance. Violence exists, usually comic and quickly undercut, with bureaucratic brutality from the Vogons and the occasional explosion, but nothing lingers or lands with real weight. Gentle, sardonic, and full of small surprises, it is for readers who enjoy satire, wordplay and the pleasure of a sentence that refuses to behave.
