The story

The NES port of the arcade classic.

What it’s like

Bright blue maze walls on a black field, chunky flat sprites, and a constant scatter of pellets make up the whole picture, with no camera to speak of, just a fixed top-down view of the board. The sound is a thin, tinny chiptune loop with the familiar chomping and a siren-like warning when the ghosts turn vulnerable, and the ghosts flash white as they near the end of their blue state. The feel is quick, bright and mildly tense: a playful, repetitive rhythm that tightens as the rounds speed up and the corridors fill with pursuers. Sessions are short and easy to dip into, suited to a spare twenty minutes, a commute, or a nostalgic evening with a controller. Cartoonish and bloodless, it has no real violence, only the cheerful peril of being chased around a maze. It is for people who want simple, fast, pattern-driven play with a retro arcade glow and a comfortable sense of getting better with each run.
