The story

Paddington, now happily settled with the Browns, picks up a series of odd jobs to buy the perfect present for his Aunt Lucy, but it is stolen.

What it’s like

Bright, warm and storybook-tidy, with saturated primary colours on Notting Hill rooftops, tidy Victorian-terrace interiors, and a pop-up-book sense of London as a place where everything is slightly handmade. The film blends live action with CGI bear and sweeps the camera through painted sets with cheerful, precise choreography: quick whip pans, elaborate tracking shots through kitchens and shop windows, and a prison and a Brown household that glow in soft lamplight. Sound is a bouncy, string-and-brass score with playful sound design for the bear's mishaps. Its vibe is gentle, sunny and affectionate, with a touch of old-fashioned slapstick. The pace is brisk but never frantic, and the emotional arc is simple and sincere: a kind outsider who keeps his decency under pressure and helps a grumpy man rediscover joy. Violence is absent; there is mild peril, a villain who is more silly than menacing, and a few tense but harmless chases. Ideal for family movie nights, a comfort rewatch, or anyone wanting something sweet, funny and kind.
