The story

In their quest to confront the ultimate evil, Percy and his friends battle swarms of mythical creatures to find the mythical Golden Fleece and to stop an ancient evil from rising.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated digital cinematography sets this one in sun-drenched summer colour: turquoise water, blue-green sea caves, glossy CGI monsters and sandy beaches that look more like a theme-park ride than a lived-in world. The camera moves briskly, with fast tracking shots, swooping aerial views over the ocean and busy handheld action in cluttered set-pieces, and the editing rarely lets a scene breathe. Its score is big and orchestral, with swelling brass and bright adventure motifs that keep the energy high. The vibe is breezy, cheerful fantasy with a light, sometimes goofy, teen-adventure edge, best suited to a lazy weekend afternoon, a family movie night or a comfort watch for fans of mythology. Violence is cartoonish and mostly bloodless: fights with sea monsters, a giant bronze automaton and a cyclops, plus some peril and jump-scare moments, but nothing graphic or truly frightening. Its emotional register is warm and loyal, following a young demigod who learns to trust his friends and his own heritage. It is for families, younger teens and anyone who wants undemanding, colourful escapism with mythic creatures and a feel-good ending.
